Back pain too often ends up on the operating table

Back pain is one of the most common diseases:
Four out of five adults experience severe back pain at some point in their lives. Too often the suffering ends on the operating table to become pain-free again, says back specialist Dr. Michael Schubert.

The back specialist in Munich is certain that most of the back problems don't have to be. Every year there are around 30,000 people with herniated discs in Germany who lie under the knife: "But eight out of ten operations are superfluous," warns the spinal surgeon Dr. Michael Schubert. Only in a maximum of five percent of cases does the back pain come from the intervertebral disc.
